Glimpses Week 3 ~ Waiting for the Bus

This is part of a typical morning-the girls all bundled up and waiting for the bus. Since it's still winter, it's cold and dark outside. They stand at the window and watch the bus go by first, then a few minutes later when I see it coming back from the other direction, they go outside to meet it. So far, they both love riding the bus. I'm sure that will change one day, but for now it's working out well.

They always look so little walking toward it--at least for now they look little. I'm sure that will change one day too. Little brother and I stand at the door waving to them. I think he misses them when they are gone all day. At least they all get really excited to see each other after school, so I think they miss each other. Really hope that never changes.

Oh, and I realize I really need to wash those windows! Ugh! Can you tell that's where my kids stand a lot to look out the window. LOL!

Art...and business

In November, I attended a workshop with the Professional Photographers of Idaho. The first day we attended educational sessions on business, exposure, lighting, pricing, client connections, posing and print competition. In addition, we had a shootout with models, different lighting set-ups and backdrops sponsored by Silverlake Photo Accessories.

I was so excited to meet some of my area's photographers who I spoken with or emailed, but never met. The workshops were inspiring and tremendously helpful. Photography is a journey and I never want to stop learning this art. During the second full day, we heard from Master photographer JuliAnne Jonker who shared with us some art history and how to apply the influences of classical artists into our own style of photography.

Even though I have a story-telling, relaxed style, and use mainly natural or available light, I still want to know classical lighting techniques, posing principles and techniques for running an efficient and profitable business. It's not only important to me to create beautiful art of the children and families I photograph-art that will only appreciate in value as time goes by-art displayed in wall galleries and heirloom albums, but it's also important for me to remember all the business side of this. I am dedicated to my clients and providing them with an amazing experience, but I also love my family. They are who inspire me a lot in my work.

Therefore in 2012, I will be concentrating mainly on pursuing my "art" and fine-tuning my business to create one that works for me and my family, while also allowing me to provide THE BEST possible customer service to my clients. I know that for me, I don't need a lot of clients, but I do need and want clients who truly value what I offer. I may not be the photographer for everyone, and that's okay too. It's taken me awhile to realize and accept that, but I am going to be better for it. I hope you continue to follow along and see where this journey takes me, and how you can also be a part of it too!

PPI Shootout
And here are some of the images I captured at the PPI Shootout. Different than what I've been doing, but really fun to practice and learn with different portrait lighting set-ups. These models are really great too!

This first image was set-up using Rembrandt lighting-one light source was set up 45 degrees to subject camera right. It's also characterized by the triangle shaped light on the shadow side of the face. You can see this lighting in Rembrandt paintings. This model is actually another professional photographer, and he was fantastic as the subject in this little vignette set-up. Here's a link to learn more about Rembrandt lighting.

The other three images were created using continuous lighting with a really large softbox as the mainlight to the left of the subject and a smaller fill light to the right of the subject. I ended up having to shoot really wide open so there is a little blur on some of the limbs, but it was good to use some different lighting set-ups. Now I just need to practice at home!

I didn't capture a lot of digital images as I took my film camera and practiced more with it. I'm looking forward to getting my prints back to see what I captured. It's been years since I used film, but it's another way I want to challenge myself this year and work on my "art."

Glimpses ~ Week 2 | Idaho Lifestyle Photographer

Here is my second week "glimpse" of our everyday life. I realized that a lot of these images are probably going to include my little guy as he's such a part of my every day. I'll have to make a concentrated effort to capture his older sisters either before or after school and on weekends, as both are gone throughout the day. I really miss having them around too. I must admit it is sometimes easier only worrying about one at home when I've got a busy work day, but I love my girls so much that having them gone all day every day makes me sad too. Just another reminder to grab all the little moments I can and hold on to each one.

Part of J's morning routine is getting to watch a little TV while I get ready for the day, check email, have some quiet time, etc. His favorite shows include "cowboy TV", which is anything on RFDTV or The Pioneer Woman on Food Network. We have all those episodes DVR'ed so he asks to watch them. He also really loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. I love that he has a favorite blankie he cuddles with too. Each of my kids has their blanket. They don't usually take them from home unless staying somewhere overnight, but they can be found with them around the house. Ahh, glad I'm writing down these little details because I know I'll forget them someday. T Family ~ Idaho Family Photographer

This is such a loving, caring family, and it was a pleasure to photograph them. Mom had received this session as part of my Mother's Day giveaway. They spent most of the time laughing and joking around, which made it very fun for all of us. Sweet baby "M" is the little princess of the family, and everyone was very excited to be welcoming another baby girl into the family soon too. They are all quite musical, so I thought it very appropriate they brought a guitar to play during their session. Thanks T family for a fun fall afternoon! Sometimes we get so busy as photographers documenting other people's lives that we neglect to document the details of our own lives. Really for me, I take plenty of photos of my own kiddos--they are my inspiration--I just don't have time to edit all of them and get them posted. Ha!

Precious Baby L ~ Idaho Newborn | Lifestyle Photographer

This little guy was so sweet and precious at just five days new. He was fed and sleepy when I arrived so did a few posed images, then moved onto my favorite ones of him with Mom and Dad, and in his room. It was decorated so cute, with little turtles. These first-time parents are so smitten with their little guy. They have been wonderful clients, as I photographed their engagement session and wedding also. They have really become friends. Thanks for letting me capture all the newness and love of little L!

Welcome 2012!

Welcome 2012! I feel like I have so much to say, so much to do, yet so little time! I guess it's all about priorities though; and seems there are lots of those to narrow down too. Ha! I had a wonderful 2011, and met some great new kids and families, and photographed some repeat clients as well, so thank you to all who trusted with with capturing their memories last year. We spent a wonderful holiday season away from home with my family, and it was so nice to have lots of downtime with extended family and my husband and kids. After a busy fall, it was just what I needed. I've been mulling over several things, and because this winter time is slower for me-on purpose-I'm taking this time to formulate a plan for this year. A plan so that my number one priority-my family-comes first. And that when I do have clients-they truly feel like they are the only ones and my priority at the time as well. It's a philosophy I've always had, but want to be better at putting it into practice. I'm always completely dedicated to my clients during the session, and kind of get lost in all the fun of it. As a goal for 2012, I want to decrease my turnaround time for viewing/ordering sessions, and delivering final products to clients.

Recently, I looked back at my New Year's post from 2011. I think it's always good to look back and see how far we've come. I am pleased that I was able to meet all those goals for last year too. One thing I am working on more is creating S.M.A.R.T. goals-specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

As I determine the best way to conduct business in 2012, I know for sure I want to shoot for myself personally and blog more-the good, and the not so good parts of life. It's hard sometimes for me to know what audience to write to-is it only my family reading this? or my friends? or potential clients? other aspiring or pro photographers? Sometimes I feel like I have to put out only that perfect photo or write the perfect words, but I realized a long time ago that I am no where near perfect. So, I am going to try to not be so hard on myself and just be me-be honest-be real. I am curious though who is out there following my work-maybe it's only my Mom. I know she loves my work, but she has to, you know. :0) Anyway, please do comment. I love to hear from people.

What are your goals for the new year?

And just because a post isn't much fun without a photo, here's a little photo of my family, taken by the wonderful and talented Randi Davies. She's become a great mentor and friend, and I enjoyed getting to know her and shooting with her last year. Although I value all kinds of photographs because they capture a moment in time, I feel strongly about hiring a fellow professional to photograph my family at least once every year or so. And it's fun to be the one in front of the camera for a change instead of always behind it!

Fall Family Session ~ Boise Family Photographer

This beautiful mama was the winner of a "Your Story" portrait session from my 2011 Mother's Day Giveaway. I was so excited to photograph her family because 1) they had never had professional portraits taken and 2) Little Ryker is just the cutest little guy. Little ones are my favorite. Happy, silly, shy or outgoing--I just love capturing who they are!

It was a slightly overcast morning, but the fall colors were still beautiful in Kathryn Albertsons Park. I had never photographed there, even though it's a rather popular place. My eyes were jumping every which way seeing all the amazing natural backdrops. But, more importantly, I wanted to capture the love between these two and their little guy. You could tell they are very much in love with each other, and their little boy. It was a pleasure hanging out with them for a morning. I had so many favorites from this session, it was hard not to want to blog them all.

Today, and every day, I am thankful for many things--my faith, family, friends, work, food, shelter... The list really can go on and on. I feel very blessed. I'm also very thankful to wake up each day and see these beautiful smiling faces, as well as tell stories with words and my camera every day. Take time to give those you love a hug or if you're far from home, at least a phone call. Happy Thanksgiving! God bless!

An Idaho Cowboy ~ Idaho Senior Photographer

I had such a great time during this senior session this summer. Drew has a quiet, gentle spirit. He was completely relaxed and in his element, so it was easy to capture his true essence. And because my lifestyle sessions are not simply about what my subjects look like, but rather their personalities and relationships, it's important for me to capture images that speak to real life. From his beautiful sorrel gelding he broke himself, to his custom-made chaps with his family's brand and his initials in the tooling, these details add to his story. Drew comes from a multi-generational ranching family. Many weekends, he can be helping his grandparents or his Dad with their cattle, taking on a lot of responsibility for a young man.

Stories ~ Idaho Lifestyle photographer

I just wanted to get a quick post up because I am out of town right now. The past two and half days I was at an amazing workshop with the Professional Photographers of Idaho. I have so many great things to say about it!! But, now I am at the Idaho Cattle Association Annual Convention and Trade Show.

May seem like those don't go together, but they do. I have always loved the creative arts, whether it was photography, painting, drawing or writing. (I even consider baking and cooking a way of expressing my artistic side, but I'll save more of that for another day.)

I'm fortunate to not only get to write with words, but also to work with ranchers mainly in Idaho, but in the past across the country. I help tell their story and get their message out about the safe, wholesome, nutritious, high quality beef they raise for our world.

In addition, my photography allows me to tell stories of my subjects with images instead of words. I feel very blessed to be able to capture people with words and story-telling portraits.

Here is just a quick peek at a senior. I loved capturing the story of him with his dogs, his horse and his cattle. More of this will come soon!

I'm so excited to blog these images! I had so much fun during this "Beautiful Woman" session a couple months ago. This gorgeous wife and mommy came to me wanting some images as a surprise gift for her husband. Not only is she a beauty on the outside, but she has a beautiful heart. She's a supportive friend and sister. I'm very blessed to have her in my life!

A "Beautiful Woman" session is about you getting in front of the camera instead of behind it. It's about celebrating you as a woman, whatever stage of life you are in. Urban Family Session ~ Nampa Lifestyle Photographer

I just love repeat clients! It's so great to photograph them throughout the year or at least once a year. And, I've been getting to photograph this little munchkin since she was in mommy's tummy! Bright and Fun ~ "Your Story" Family Session ~ Idaho Lifestyle Photograher

I had such a great time photographing this family at their home. I was so glad when they called to book their session, as these kids are just darling and full of spunk! I told Mom to just tell the kids we were having a playdate, and that's exactly what we did! We ran around the yard, played with bubbles, visited their calves in the pasture, played in the dirt, went on the swingset, and captured some wonderful family memories. I feel this session was another great example of a "Your Story" lifestyle session with me.

During our pre-session consultant, we talked about how photographing them at their home would let them all be more comfortable, and we would also be able to capture beautiful memories of everyday activities they do as a family. We also talked about clothing options-how they could find coordinating options for each member, but that they didn't have to be all matching. I love the bright, fun colors they chose!

Thank you "F" family for inviting me into your home and letting me capture these memories for you! It was a lot of fun!

Four on Friday ~ Idaho Lifestyle Photographer

Just some random thoughts on my mind today. Hope you have a great Friday everyone!

Did you know they make Pumpkin Spice marshmallows? Yuuuummy! I also saw chocolate, chocolate mint, caramel and vanilla swirl and strawberry flavored ones on the shelf at the store the other day. I was a little tempted to purchase them all. I'm not a huge marshmallow fan, but I think it would be fun to try them. I decided that might be a little excessive so I refrained, but maybe if I just buy one bag at a time it won't be so crazy. Maybe?! The chocolate mint ones would be fun for hot cocoa! Anyone try these flavors yet?

Speaking of pumpkin...that's what is melting in my Scentsy warmer--well not a real pumpkin, but rather Pumpkin Roll. It definitely reminds me of fall. I also have Dear Mr. Watson in our main bathroom-reminds me of my hubby's aftershave, Silhouette in our bedroom-kind of a musky, sexy scent and Lucky in Love in the girls' bathroom-light and girly smelling. What about you all? Do you have a favorite scent, candle or air freshener you use?

Yesterday I mentioned using my crockpot lately. I prepared one of my favorite recipes. In fact, my mom still makes it for me whenever we go home for a visit. It's called Creamy Crockpot-I know not super original of a name, but trust me it's delicious! My mom clipped the recipe out of the High Plains Journal when I was a kid. (As an aside-this was one of my favorite ag magazines my dad subscribed to when I was growing up. In addition to great news and features stories, and editorial columns, it also has a page of recipes and one with house plans. I still have a file of house plans for the home we may--or may not--ever build.) Anyway, onto the recipe:

Creamy Crockpot
1-2 lbs of top or bottom round steak-This is a more economical cut of beef and lends itself well to crockpot cooking, as you want to cook it low and slow. You can cube the meat or cut it in larger pieces.
2 cans cream soup (I use cream of mushroom or cream of celery, whatever I have on hand.)
1 cup each of green pepper and onion cut into chunks
Dashes of Worchestershire sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder.
Just mix up the soup and spices, pour over meat in crockpot. I usually add the peppers and onions about halfway through cooking. Cook 6-8 hours on low heat. The longer it cooks the more tender the meat becomes. The soup makes this incredibly tasty gravy. I serve it over rice.

I would have taken a photo, but it isn't the prettiest dish. However, it tastes wonderful, is comforting and reminds me of home. :0) Do you have any favorite crockpot recipes?

Smiling in the Rain ~ Idaho Lifestyle Photographer

The rain we're having is a nice break from the summer heat, but after three days, I'm ready for a little sunshine. Although if I get a little discouraged about the weather, I just think about this smiling face and how she loves to be outside no matter what it's like. It also helps to have a yummy meal in the crockpot and a cup of hot tea on this cold, wet day.

And, if I do have to go out in the rain, you bet I'm going to wear some fun rainboots! :0)

I was so excited when one of my clients contacted me about having this beautiful Grandmother's necklace made with an image from her grandson's Essence session. A local artist, Charlotte Dube', created this keepsake for the very proud grandma. More of Charlotte's work can be viewed at The House that Art Built in Ontario, Ore.

Here is a sample of a collection of 8X10 gallery mounts hanging in a client's home. The image is flush with the edge and ready to hang.

My Cowboy ~ Two-year-old ~ Idaho Children Photographer

Little J's usual attire ALWAYS includes his boots. In fact, since he got them, he wears them with EVERYTHING. Literally, everything. His shorts, his jeans, his pajamas, even just a pull-up. When I ask what shoes he wants to wear, he says his boots. He'll even walk around the house calling out to them as if they will answer back so he knows where they are. He's two, and I'm not going to fuss over his clothing choices. He can put them on himself, sometimes backwards, but he gets them on. And he's just pretty stinking adorable. He won't always wear them with everything, and I want to remember this about his toddler years.

But today, he picked a couple other accessories to wear with his boots--his sister's cowboy hat, which by the looks of it, fits him perfectly, so I think it's his now--and his chaps. The chaps great grandpa Bob made for Josh when he was a little boy. They fit him perfectly now too. Man, I really, really love my little cowboy!

I was so excited to hear that Baby T made a safe arrival into the world in June. This sweet little boy is already loved so much by his family. You may have remembered his beautiful glowing mama I photographed before he arrived.

It was fun to not only capture the newness of this sweet little guy, but I was also invited to a lovely little tea party with his big sisters!

I love photographing newborns at their home. Everyone is relaxed and comfortable, plus I get to capture all the details of the baby's nursery. Dad's a big car lover. And Mom was super creative in decorating his vintage car themed room, complete with old tools from baby T's grandpa used.

Thank you Deanna and Stuart for welcoming me into your home and letting me capture these fleeting moments for you. As the kids grow, I hope you look back at your portraits and remember this special time.

Just looking back at these images makes me think of my own babies and how much they've grown. Ahh, time goes by so fast. Enjoy each minute of it!!

First Days of School ~ Getting personal

I was going through images today of the first (and second) days of school this year for the girls. I happened to look on my blog to see which ones of MJ I used from when she started Kindergarten. I actually happen to blog about her first day of Kindergarten on this very day, Sept. 3. I thought it would be fun to look back a little here and here. And here's one of the girls together that day. I love their expressions. Emma looks up to Mackenzie so much; it's really sweet. She was a little sad to see her big sis leave for school that day.

Fast forward to today...
It's fun to look back and see how much kids have grown and changed. This year our Little E started Kindergarten. Having another child hit that milestone is again bittersweet. I am excited for her and all the growing up she is doing. Her spunky personality continues to shine through. She's excited about her school year, just has M is excited about starting second grade.

On the first day of school, I dropped the girls off. We took photos in front of the school, as well as with their teachers. MJ wasn't nearly as excited about having me tag along for photos-she just didn't want to be late and miss meeting her friends before school.

At first I wished E didn't have her fingers in her mouth or that she wasn't twirling her hair in the above photo, then I realized that she won't do either of those things forever. It reminded me that even though she's getting bigger all the time, she's still a little girl. These are the details of childhood (while not perfect) are still part of who she is, and I want to embrace that too.

I also took more photos on the second day of school as this was the first day the girls rode the bus to school this year. The girls are loving school and I anticipate another great year for both of them. It's hard to believe school has already started again. The mornings are also starting to be a little crisp. Just a little hint that fall is definitely right around the corner. I'm not quite ready to say goodbye to summer, but each new season brings new adventures...and new memories.

This little guy is the youngest of four boys. I've known his family for quite awhile now, and I've been able to photograph all of his big brothers. Little R just turned one, and I captured his little personality during an Essence session. It's neat to see how each of the boys have a different look and personality, yet you can tell they are brothers. Thanks Crystal for coming over. It was great fun!

A Gift from Above ~ Boise Newborn Photographer

It was so great working with these first-time parents and meeting their sweet little girl. Carl and Katie were so enamored with sweet little "M". This little punkin arrived a wee bit early, and weighed only 5 pounds, but she was just perfect. She slept like a dream during her session, and we captured some beautiful moments of her and her proud parents. I know she is surrounded by lots of loving grandparents, aunts and uncles. Being the first grandchild on both sides of the family, she is going to have lots of attention. Congratulations Katie and Carl! Enjoy every minute of parenthood; it all goes by so fast!

Dimples ~ Oregon Child Portrait Photographer

When little "R's" Grandma contacted me about photographing him when he turned six months old, it was easy to tell she was very proud of her first grandchild. She told me he just had the cutest smile and could light up a room. And boy was she right! Look at those dimples! It was such a pleasure being able to capture these memories for Kathie and her family. Thank you so much!

I had the pleasure of getting to know Kathie through the Idaho Business Women's Network, and through her work as a public relations specialist and the Executive Director of the Treasure Valley Children's Relief Nursery. Why I Love Second Shooting Weddings ~ Boise Wedding Photographer

I had the great opportunity and pleasure to second shoot weddings for several years before I photographed some on my own. I started working with Steve and Tammy Jeffs of Amore Photography & Design, and most recently worked with Amber Fischer Photography and Randi Davies Photography.

I love getting to work with other photographers I admire. It's always fun to have someone great to work and learn with. Brides and grooms benefit from having two photographers because they get different perspectives of their event, as well.

Sometimes as a second shooter, I get to set up my own shots and poses. Other times, I grab all the detail shots (which I LOVE), while the main photographer works with the couple. Always, I'm there to help where needed and just add to the great experience a bride and groom expect on their special day.

Another reason I love second shooting, is while the main photographer (Amber, in this case) gets an image from here....

Her First Show ~ Getting Personal

In June, Mackenzie participated in her first junior livestock show as a member of the Idaho Junior Hereford Association. She and her heifer, "Crystals", did wonderful. I, however, was a nervous wreck! Watching your child do anything for the first time is always bittersweet. It's excited and scary all at the same time. It was just us girls that weekend, and we had a great time. We stalled with some wonderful friends of ours too who were very helpful.

Josh and I both grew up showing livestock, and we learned a lot about hard work, dedication and responsibility. It's exciting to see our kids be able to have this opportunity as well. Mackenzie and Emma were both great troopers, helping get our stall ready, and washing, blow drying and brushing the heifer. They also had lots of fun hanging out with some new friends they met that weekend. Thanks to my MIL Carla who joined us for the weekend as well, and who took some of these photos.

Looking forward to making more memories like this!

This is such an amazing couple. And I had so much fun capturing their engagement portraits. I am so thankful Blayne's mom contacted me about the session, because he and Kelcie are the nicest couple. One of my goals for 2011 was to blog more images from each session because my style of photography is so storytelling. I love capturing the details about my clients, as well as how they interact. Displaying Your Wall Portraits ~ Idaho Portrait Photographer

In a similar post I blogged in April, I talked about displaying portraits in your home. I've been working on a follow-up post for awhile now to talk about the different sizes of wall portraits. As I stated in that original post, I used to be a little leery of large wall portraits. And then I purchased some of my own family, and I am IN LOVE with them! There really is nothing like having beautiful portraits of your own family hanging on your wall--much better than the mass produced pieces from home decor' stores.

Sometimes it's hard to visual how large an image you would need for the space you want to display it. In these examples, I used my standard-sized loveseat (54 inches wide).

Here is an example of a 30X45 canvas. Looks amazing doesn't it? Lots of impact, and why wouldn't you smile if you walked in to your own home and saw an image of your family like this?

Here is another beautiful example of using a collage of gallery wrapped canvases to create a wall display in your home. For these, we take the space available, find images you love and find sizes to fit that space. The fun thing about designing a wall gallery like this is you don't have to do it alone-I help with all of those decisions and you can see how it's going to look in your own home!

Now this is the 20X30 we have hanging in our living room. And I admit, I do wish I had purchased a larger size. But I still absolutely love this canvas. Now maybe you're thinking, what?? 20X30! I can't do that. I don't think I couldn't go bigger than 16X20.

Well, this is a 16X24. What do you think? For me, it's just not big enough by itself for this space. It would make a great anchor for a collage of additional images of the girls though.

Again, here is an example of a print that is just too small, but may seem "big" to you right now. It's an 11X14. This is the smallest size for a wall print. And again, if you want to display in a large space over a table, sofa, bed, etc., it is too small by itself.

Finally, just for fun, here is an 8X10 image above the sofa. As great as the image is, it just doesn't have the WOW! factor that a large print would have. This size is actually a Gift Print, and is designed to sit on a desk or shelf.

I hope this post has been helpful in showing you different print sizes and how they might look in a large space. My mission as a portrait photographer is to provide you with timeless, storytelling images that you are thrilled to display as wall art and in heirloom quality albums. There is no better ART than that of your family, and I love to help my clients design their wall galleries that they smile at every time they seem them. I'd like to leave you with other thought in regards to wall portraits and ART of your family. Our home decor styles and tastes may change over time. What we love today may be what we cringe at in ten years. However, the portraits we have of our families will appreciate in value. We won't be getting back the time when our kids are little or when our parents are alive and healthy. The images of life we have captured right now are going to be the windows to the past that will mean even more to us later on.
I promise you this; your family will never go out of style.

Learn to Dance in the Rain ~ Idaho Children's Photographer

How will you appreciate the sunshine if you never learn to dance in the rain?

I love how kids don't really care what the weather is like; they just love to be outside in it. My kids will go outside at any time-whether it's blazing hot or freezing cold. They love to swing, run around the yard, dig in the sand--anything to be outside. I wish I was as happy to get up and get outside as much as they are. I let work, taking care of our home and other stuff get in the way of enjoying life some days. It would do us all more good to be outside enjoying God's green earth.

We've had a really wet spring this year. We usually call our little spot on the map part of the southern Idaho desert; however it's seemed more like Portland or Seattle lately. I admit, it's hard not to let some of the gloomy days get to me. But, just when I think I can't take another dreary day, I'm reminded that we have to stop and appreciate the rainy days just as much as the sunny days. Because without those times of sadness, sorrow or gloom, I think we would take for granted all the gloriously sunny days we have too. Now this could be a little metaphor for life. I know I let my circumstances or annoyances of the day get me down, but I'm so thankful for my little ray of sunshine to remind me that when God brings rain, it's time to go "jump in the puddles!"

The next time life or the rain has you down, just put on your muck boots and jump in! The sun will be shining again soon!

"Beautiful Woman" ~ Idaho Portrait Photographer

I was so excited when Lisa contacted me this winter for a "Beautiful Woman" session. As women, especially moms, we seldom let ourselves get dressed up and get out in front of the camera instead of behind it. The only times may be when we're getting senior portraits done or on our wedding day. I wanted to create a special session that celebrates women. No matter what we look like, where we're at in life or what we're doing, we are beautiful.

It was such a pleasure to photograph this beautiful family. Being teachers, Stuart and Deanna are raising their girls to love learning. And they all enjoy reading together. It was neat to capture something they do every day as a family in a beautiful way for them. One of their favorite books is I Love You Stinky Face, which is a sweet story of the unconditional love of a mother for her son. After hearing the story, I think I'll have to pick it up for my kiddos too!

Deanna is a beautiful expecting mother. She just had that glow. I really enjoyed getting to know her more this year as she was our oldest's teacher. It was fun seeing them all together as a family too; they love each other so much.

We had a fun time photographing in and around their home. I always enjoy coming to my client's homes and favorite locations, as they tend to be more comfortable and relaxed. We also had some beautiful light that evening during the "Golden hour," my very favorite time to photograph people.

The girls are adorable and are both excited to be big sisters to a baby brother. I was thrilled to get to know them all better during this session.

So excited for you to welcome a little boy to your family, and can't wait to see you all again for his newborn session!

It was great having my parents here last week to spend time with us. The time always go by too fast, but I love capturing memories like this to always remember our time together. It was especially nice to be able to celebrate Mother's Day with my mom. She is such a great listener, super supportive and always makes me laugh. And she's an awesome grandma too. I am so thankful that our girls (and Little J) have gotten to know my family even though we live far away from them. They look forward to the visits as much as I do. Love you Mom and Dad! What's your favorite way to display? ~ Idaho Portrait Photographer

I thought it would be fun to hear and see how my clients, friends, fans and any blog stalkers I might have out there like to display their favorite memories-be it professional portraits or just snapshots they have taken. So, how about it? I'd love to hear what you do with those special moments! If you have a photo-even better. You can either send it to me at info@maggiemalsonphotography.com or post it to my Facebook fan page. I'll go first. Here's one wall of our living room. I have two other walls in this room that have photos displayed too, but this one is probably my favorite.

On the left, I have three 8X10 Gallery Mounts that I took of our kiddos. I love the plate rack my SIL gave me as a birthday gift. It made a great way to display these images. I normally wouldn't put 8X10's on the wall unless there was more than one. They are just too small by themselves unless in a really tight space, so this worked out beautifully.

In the center of the wall is my favorite--the 20X30 gallery wrapped canvas of our family. I swapped family sessions with fellow local photographer, Amber Fischer, and she captured a beautiful moment for us. I love it and it makes me smile EVERY time I look at it. That's what art of your family is supposed to do. :0) And that's why I think ART of your own children or family should be on your walls. What a great way to share the memories of them and show your kiddos how much they mean to you? My girls love the collages I made for each of them to sit on their desks from their birthday sessions.

I admit, I used to be freaked out about large wall portraits and thought 11X14 was large. I'm a big scrapbooker too (well used to be-I'm so behind now, but am determined to get caught up!). If it didn't fit in a 12X12 album, I thought it was too big. However, I knew when we did this session, that I wanted to order a big canvas. In fact, I really wished I'd ordered a larger one, 24X36 or even 30X40! And once I hung it on the wall, I was hooked! We have several other large (16X20 or bigger) canvases and Gallery Mounts on other walls of our home now too. And again, every time I looked at these images I just smile and remember.

Well, what if I have a small home or little wall space, you ask? Well, I realize that can be an issue. And there are a few options. Either get the biggest wall portrait or canvas you can to fit the space to give a big impact with just one image (really don't be afraid of going big) or try using several smaller prints together to create a collage look on the wall. You can put them in the same frame with matting, identical frames or mix and match frames, depending on your style and decor. However, I would recommend keeping the space between frames small, as that will also give the images more impact. If you think you have to spread them out to fill up space, you probably need a bigger print size. As a service to my portrait clients, I can also help them create wall groupings with portraits from their sessions. I can even show you what your prints will look like in different spaces in your home.

I have used Gift Prints (8X10 or smaller) together in several places in our home, either on the wall or a shelf, piano, dresser, etc. In this photo, you can see I put two 4X6's from that same family session on a small magnet board. Normally, I believe 4X6's only belong in a scrapbook or on a desk, but grouped together they can make a nice display.

Finally, on the side table is a Keepsake Album I designed from that session. I wanted to have all of our images in one place. It is a hardbound press-printed photobook with a leather cover and UV-coated hinged pages. I love how durable it is; I don't get as nervous when our two-year-old wants to look through it as I do the paper albums I've printed from scrapbook places. (Still glad I have those, but there is a big difference in quality between the two.) The girls love looking at it also! I don't worry about the pages getting torn or how it will last for several generations. I know that it is a keepsake we can enjoy for years and pass down through the family.

Whether you have big wall portraits or small gift prints in frames, or even have done something totally different with your favorite memories, what really matters is that you are capturing them, displaying them and enjoying them! Last Saturday I had the pleasure of capturing these little beauties during a Portrait Party! What's a portrait party you ask? Miss A and Miss H were are such dolls. Miss A enjoyed playing with the tea party set and Easter eggs we had available. Six-month-old H didn't want mommy to get very far away, and she took a little warming up, but she has the cutest grin. And I love those cheeks! Her mom Becca made that adorable headband to match big sis's skirt too. She's a graphic designer and super creative. It was fun meeting her and her sweet girls! Thanks again! What?! Cupcakes, Key Lime Pie, Kids and Cows? Well, check out some of these links (and some photos) I wanted to share and see what's happening around here. Sometimes I find the coolest things when I'm ~~wasting time~~, I mean, cruising the Internet doing valuable and pertinent work-related research. Ha, that sounds official, doesn't it?! Other times, I just find some neat things out there in the real world, that I just think are really fun and I want to pass them along. Let me know what you think...

For starters, if you have little ones or are expecting one, you have to check out this site, On to Baby. They have the neatest ideas, products and inspiration for the wee ones in your life. I absolutely love this totally unique, beautifully designed Custom Word Book.

Also, I found a beautiful post by photographer Deb Schwedhelm recently. She is an amazing artist with a unique eye. How many of you out there are waiting for the perfect time to schedule your family portrait session? Well, ladies and gents, the perfect time is NOW. Read Deb's thoughts. Is There a Perfect Time?

For you local folks, if you're in the mood for some amazing sweet treats, check out Miss Ellie's Cakes in Nampa. We stopped in there one night when they were about to close and picked up some delicious treats-fresh strawberry, vanilla and German chocolate cupcakes, and a giant no bake cookie. They were even great tasting at the end of the day! Annie bakes everything herself every morning. You have to check this little place out!

The other day I was in Walmart and discovered Wrigley's Extra Dessert Delights Gum. This stuff is awesome! I am so excited to think maybe I can curb my sweet tooth by chewing dessert flavored gum instead of rummaging through my cabinet and downing a handful of chocolate chips when the cravings hit me or eating a bowl full of ice cream in the middle of the day! Seriously, I do that. Sad, but true. So far, I think Key Lime Pie is my favorite flavor, although I loved Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream when I tried it first. The other choice is Strawberry Shortcake. Not sure if I can call this a permanent solution, but for now I'm trying to go for the gum whenever I need something sweet, which is usually after every meal. You know, a little sweet after something savory? Thanks Wrigley's!

A Dancer's Story ~ Idaho Portrait Photographer

Last year I had the pleasure of photographing dancers from Elite Dance Academy in the Treasure Valley. One of the dancers is especially talented and we worked together to capture some beautiful images that tell her story as a dancer. I designed her images into an album, which are shown here.

As a photographer, my goal with each session is to create timeless, story-telling images. These images show the details and the big picture of who you are or who your family is, and not just what you look like. In addition, we can capture your relationships and interactions with each other, so that each time you look back at your images, you feel the same way you felt when they were taken.

For the second year, Maggie Malson Photography is participating in the International Charity Model Search. This year's model search is to select North America’s Cutest Kid and to raise funds for the non-profit Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation.

The grand prizewinner will win a $2,500 savings bond, a $2,500 travel package, and a $100 Target gift card. The second and third place runners up each will win a $500 savings bond and a $100 Target gift card.

Model Search Special:
$50 entrance fee per child includes a 15-minute mini session and one image submitted to the International gallery. You will receive 6-10 images to preview in an online gallery and one gift print (up to 8X10, value $40). Siblings will incur an additional session fee and their own time slot. Special pricing on limited edition portrait products will also be available. The contest runs from now until March 31, so sessions will be scheduled beginning Feb. 1 through March 28, 2011.

Yes, yes, I realize it's Tuesday, but since yesterday was a holiday (President's Day) and the kids didn't have school, we just hung out as a family. Here is our sweet Little E. She's our middle. It's hard to believe she's almost five. She's smart, funny, independent, a little sassy, but also so sweet. She likes to hang out with her big sis and mother her baby brother. Playing babies, pretend cooking, racing cars, reading books, dancing and putting together puzzles are some of her favorite activities. She loves to help me in the kitchen--cooking, baking, cleaning. Anything to help, she wants to do. She has taught me patience (scratch that) is teaching me patience. She's brought immense joy to our family and we love her so very much!

Mine on Monday ~ Idaho Children's Photographer

It's hard to believe it's the last day of January! Seems the month has already been a whirlwind and February looks like it will be just as busy. I was going to wait to post these closer to Valentine's Day, but I realized I hadn't done a Mine on Monday for awhile. While I usually capture my children in their element just doing things they love, my oldest really loves the camera and doesn't mind me breaking out a little studio set-up every now and then. She can really work the lens too. I just can't believe how this little lady keeps growing up before our eyes. She is so insightful, full of questions, a little opinionated (I think that's from me), responsible, compassionate, funny and has a sweet spirit. I love her so much! She (and her siblings) inspire me to be a better mom and person every day! Love you sweet girl!

Model Search Special:

The More the Merrier ~ Midvale Family Photographer

A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing an extended family session near Midvale. All the kids and grandkids were home for the holidays and they wanted a beautiful portrait of everyone together. The referral for the session came from Slice of Life Photography, who is the family photographer for one of the families back in Michigan. SILP found me through the "Find a Photographer" link on the PPA website. My membership in Professional Photographers of America is my commitment to my clients that I will run a professional, profitable business and am devoted to continuing education and learning all I can about my craft.

With seven adults and eight little ones ranging from toddler to tween, it was a busy morning. But, I'm used to lots of little ones around as my husband and I both have large families. It's also neat to see all the different personalities when you get everyone together. We had some shy ones, some silly ones and some happy ones. And even a little comedian. He kept us laughing with his knock knock jokes. Thanks Mr. J! You helped keep things light and fun!

Due to the weather being so bitter cold, we decided to keep things inside, but the lighting was beautiful thanks to two huge windows. I love being able to photograph families in their own homes or a place they love as they tend to be more comfortable and relaxed during their session.

I have to give a special shout out to my friend and assistant Jodie! She was the extra two hands I needed to get all the kids around and everyone together. Thanks so much!

Since I strive to create timeless, storytelling images to display as wall art or in fine art albums, I wanted to start highlighting some of the products I offer to clients. During the next few posts, we'll look at different portrait products, as well as ways to display them in the home. With all the Christmas orders being put in, I had several for gallery wrapped canvases.

I absolutely love these gallery-wrapped canvases. They are simply stunning. My lab uses the highest quality canvas printing and does a great job of finishing them, including backing paper, sawtooth hangers and bumpers so these portraits require no additional work or framing. Just unwrap and hang! They are available in 1.5 or 2" depths and come in any size from 5X5 up to 40X60. They make such a statement in any home. Mine on Monday ~ Idaho Children's Photographer

It's been awhile since I've done Mine on Monday, but with my new year's goal of blogging more, I thought this would be a great place to start.

In October, my sister-in-law and niece came out so we could take some cousin pics for the grandparents' Christmas presents. I also took the time to capture my little ones as well. They had a great time running through the pasture, and we caught some really sweet moments. And of course, we had some funny outtakes as well. It's hard not to when you're trying to photograph four little ones, ages 1 to 7. In fact, I admit, my kids are the hardest for me to photograph. I don't know if it's because they've grown up with a camera in their faces or if I just expect so much from them. But children are one of my favorite subjects. With clients, all I have to focus on is having fun and letting them be themselves. And over time, I've also learned that's best with my own kiddos too. They each have such different personalities and I just want to get it all because I know they are growing too fast! In the end, all our jumping around and silliness was worth it as we got some cute images of our kiddos. And as we were looking through all the proofs, we remembered how fun the whole evening was, evening with all the outtakes. Sometimes it's really the journey that you remember and not just the destination.

As 2011 is upon us, it's time to reflect on the past year and make some goals for the future. Thank you to my friends, family, clients and fans. Your support of me and my business is so dearly appreciated. I've come up with a little motto for the new year. In all things, professional and personal, I hope to give JOY, give LOVE, give PEACE and make MEMORIES! God bless you all. Have a wonderful new year!!

As a photographer, I have a goal to blog more often. Along with showcasing my recent portrait sessions, my goal is to blog more about myself too. I want you to really get to know me. I feel photography is about relationships and there is also an element of trust. You have to trust that when you hire a professional photographer, they are going to deliver what they say they will. I want you to get to know me as a friend, as much as a professional. You should know I like to have fun, but I can be serious too. During a session, I'm completely focused on my clients, getting lost in capturing the special moments being shared among them. But, I also have a young family of my own and in order to do the best for my clients, I have to make sure I'm taking care of those at home too. My little ones are the inspiration for my work and they must remain a priority for me in the new year. In addition to sharing more about me, I also want to post more how to's, session tips and ideas for displaying portraits in your home.

In addition, I would like to photograph at least 12 new clients in 2011. I don't have to be busy all the time. I realized my limitations after being extremely busy in 2010. I want to know I'm giving my undivided attention to my clients when it's work time and undivided attention to my family when they need me. Finding balance is what the new year is all about. I will be looking for some new faces in the next couple months as I want to try some ideas for sessions I've been playing around with though. Giving back to my community is also important to me. I've worked with Help Portrait and Love, INC., in the past and will continue to do so, but also want to expand my charitable contributions in 2011. I'll be looking for ways to give the gift of memories to those who've never had access to professional portrait photography. I'll also be calling on you guys too; together we can really make a difference!

As we start off on this new year, my goals will be to give JOY, LOVE & PEACE to the people I meet and share life with, and to make MEMORIES with my own family, as well as yours. God bless you all in 2011!

It was such a pleasure to photograph this family. They are such beautiful people, inside and out. We've gotten to know the family a little through church and Kim was Mackenzie's religious education teacher last year. MJ just adored her. She was so great with all the kids.

Little A kept us on our toes during their session, and he really had a ball once the leaves started flying in the back yard. I've been waiting to blog their session so they could get Christmas cards sent out because they chose some of these images to include. I love all my sessions. I really do. Each one is so different. Each family shares something with me that makes me a better photographer as well as a better person. However, I knew as soon as I start shooting this session, there was going to be something special about it. Everything just clicked. I think part of it was mom and I spent time beforehand on the phone visiting about clothing choices, the style of their family session and about the location.

I offer complimentary pre-session consultations to clients and it has been such a great experience. I learn more about the clients wants, needs and likes/dislikes about photographs they've had in the past. They get to ask all their questions and learn more about me and my style. These are really vital to new clients as there is so much more time and resource investment for both photographer and client when you're working with a custom lifestyle photographer. I want my clients to come prepared, be relaxed and ready to have fun. Because we always have fun!

Mom did an awesome job choosing clothing that coordinated together, but wasn't all matchy-matchy. The location was spot on as well. We knew they were looking for some wall art pieces from this session, but also wanted to capture candid moments with each other and their sweet little boy. He just turned two and is full of wonder about everything. We were able to capture all of that in this session.

Mom cried when she saw the last one of her little boy with his hands behind his back. Not that I want to see my clients crying, but I knew that I had created an image that evoked a lot of emotion for her. She told me after her gallery viewing that he's done that since he started walking. They've tried to take pictures of it, but never got it just right. I was able to do that. Some day Little H will be all grown up, but when his mom looks back at that image, she'll remember that little boy. That's why I do this. I want to capture those memories-those little things-for the families I photograph so they can remember them forever.

I absolutely love this one. I kept coming back to it. It was as if I wasn't even there and was just catching a close-up glimpse of a family moment that happens with them every day.

Thank you H family for letting me capture these families memories for you. And for letting me see your little guy grow up through the lens of my camera!

A Snow Day ~ Getting personal

With all the snow we've had lately, the kids have had a lot of fun out in it. The girls love running around and making snow angels. We even collected some for snow ice cream. We still have nearly of foot of snow out on the lawn. Last week, I bundled Little J up and he went out for a bit. This was really his first time playing in snow as he too little last year to enjoy any of it. At first he wasn't so sure, but then he got tickled when he'd stick his hand in it and it's come out on his mitten. I just love seeing my kiddos experiencing something new.

P.S. Don't you just love his hat?! It's the only one he'll keep on. His great grandparents brought it back from New Zealand.

I just love this quote. I think I need to get it in vinyl and put it on my wall. When it all comes down to it, it's not our house, our job, our car or any material possessions or success we have that truly makes us happy, but rather the people we have in our lives, especially our family.

I love this family too. It's been fun watching the girls grow up through the years. They are filled with faith and love for each other. So glad I get to call them friends! Leaves are Falling on my Head ~ Payette Children's Photographer

Okay, so maybe it's suppose to be to be "raindrops are falling my head", but this day we had leaves falling on our heads. I had such a fun time when I met up with little A and his mom a couple weeks ago. He is two now and just getting so big. We had great time strolling around town checking out the leaves and other curiosities that caught his eye. That's what I love about lifestyle sessions like these; just capturing kids checking things out. We even tried to take a little break to play with some toy trucks too, but A thought exploring was much more fun. He's grown a lot since I met him here! I just love it when clients come back again. One of the best times of your life ~ Weiser Senior Portrait Photographer

Senior year is one of the best times in a teenager's life. They are at a crossroads, deciding where their future will take them. I was thrilled when Miss S and her mom contacted me about taking her senior portraits. I met her mom several years ago and our paths continue to cross. I've come to know and become very fond of their whole family. They raise cattle; we raise cattle. That instantly bonds us I think.

I just love it when clients become friends or when friends become clients. Photography is about relationships and trust. I love when my clients know and trust me to capture not only what they look like, but more importantly their special bonds and the true essence of them as individuals. And for me, a custom portrait session is also about the entire experience of capturing and creating timeless images, from the consultation all the way to delivery of beautiful albums and prints.

We had a questionable day weather-wise back in October, but I was beyond excited when I started editing these images. Shane is absolutely stunning and we had a blast with her mom and sister tagging along. I love being able to photograph on location at places that hold special meaning to my clients. In fact, during her gallery viewing and ordering session, Shane said these images just remind her of home and she loves that. I hope whenever she looks back at her senior portraits she is always reminded of home.

It was a little overcast, which I don't mind photographing in. But then, toward the end of the session, the clouds parted at the horizon and we would blessed with an amazing sunset!

Good luck with all you do this year Shane! I hope you have an awesome senior year. Don't let it go by too fast though. :0) And if you decide to go purple, we'll be excited to welcome you to the Wildcat family!! Busy, busy, busy ~ Idaho Family Photographer

Yes, things are busy--and fun--and going well. I know I've been a bit absent from the blog lately, but not for lack of desire. In fact, I've been composing several posts in my head and hope to get them all on paper-or screen-soon. I have a few business-related announcements so I'll get those out of the way.

First of all, I have stopped doing sneak peeks on my blog before my clients see their images. Another reason for the lack of posts-I'm focusing on editing and getting all the client galleries ready. A couple reasons have led me to that decision, but mainly it's about customer service. I am starting to offer in-person ordering sessions. Each client will receive a personal slideshow with their images at a time and place convenient for them. I am then available to show them product samples and answer any questions they have about portrait collections, print sizes and the differences in cropping for each and how best to display their images in their homes. I feel this service adds to the experience of custom portrait photography. So far, my clients have been thrilled to see their images presented this way. After each gallery viewing, I will blog the images and clients can share the posts with family and friends.

Also, I am booked for 2010 and am scheduling into mid-January 2011. The rest of this year will be devoted to finishing recent sessions and spending some much needed time with my own little family. I am available for winter outdoor sessions for families who would like some fun "in the snow" images. In addition, I am scheduling newborns, babies and children for indoor sessions during the upcoming winter months. I also hope to focus on "Your Everyday Story" Sessions next year. These are great for families who really want someone there to capture all the little moments that usually happen when no one is around, whether it be baking cookies, reading books, playing trains or having ticklefests. I want my clients to know that there is a professional, trustworthy photographer available to capture those everyday moments in your home. These sessions are about real life moments. They are fresh, real and fun! I often find myself wanting someone to capture those special moments with my own family-with me in them-so I want to provide this service to you! These sessions include a custom-designed 8X8 Keepsake Album and savings on a la cart items. Contact me to find out more.

Sweet Seven-year-old ~ Parma Children's Photographer

Okay, maybe I'm a little biased because she's mine, but I think this girl is pretty sweet! We had such a fun time the other night with a photo session dedicated solely to capturing her and all her uniqueness. (She was nice enough to let little sis tag along and jump into a few shots too.) My M is a great big sister, kind, creative, sensitive and simply a beautiful gift from God. She is wise beyond her years. I see her blossoming into a wonderful young lady. It seems she is growing up way to fast for this mama. Fortunately, she's not too old to enjoy doodling with the sidewalk chalk and hasn't started rolling her eyes at me yet, so I guess we're okay so far. I love you Mackenzie! Thanks for being you! "Chalk" I Heart Faces Photo Challenge ~ Idaho Children's Photographer

I just love sidewalk chalk and so do my kids. You can catch me every now and then doodling out on our patio with them. Last night I took our oldest out for her 7-year-old photo session. We got some really fun images of her drawing and playing with chalk. Imagine my surprise and delight when I saw that this week's I Heart Faces Photo Challenge was "Chalk." I couldn't have planned it more perfectly! I just love this little moment I captured while she was drawing. Go check out the other fun entries this week. Happy Birthday Miss M ~ Getting personal

Last weekend we celebrated our oldest's 7th birthday! I really have a hard time typing that. I truly cannot believe I am mother to a seven-year-old first grader. I remember when she was born and thinking wow, I can't even imagine what it will be like when she goes to school. And here we are!! We had a wonderful time celebrating her special day. After school on Friday, she got to have Mom all to herself as little sister and brother went to stay with the grandparents. I find the older she gets the more she craves Mommy time, and I do too. It gets harder to get that one-on-one time that is so important for each of our kiddos. We baked two kinds of cupcakes (for a total of four), made three different frostings and organized all the sprinkles and toppings you could imagine. She was having a Cupcake Decorating Party with seven friends from school on Saturday. I have to admit I'm usually the box cake kind of girl. I have never had the best of luck with homemade cake. It usually turns out too dry or too dense. But, I found a fun little blog and e-mailed the gal. She gave me some great tips and sent me some recipes to try. We made yellow, fresh strawberry and chocolate. Then, as a surprise for MJ, I baked some Orange Creamsicle ones after she went to bed. I think they ended up being my favorite. I just used the yellow recipe and adapted it with some orange juice and orange extract. I think next time I'll use some zest too, but they had plenty of orange flavor. I put whipped cream/cream cheese frosting with them. Yummo! I think they all turned out great. I used buttermilk in the recipes and I think it was part of the difference. We made vanilla buttercream for the strawberry and yellow cupcakes and used chocolate buttercream for the chocolate ones.

MJ invited seven friends (only 6 could make it), and they each decorated seven cupcakes (one to eat at the party and six to take home). Before the cupcake decorating began they each decorated a cake box and thought about what name they would give their bakery if they owned one. They came up with some pretty cute ideas. They each received an apron to wear and take home, then the decorating began! They had a blast choosing which flavor of cake, which frosting and which of the many toppings to finish it off. We had sprinkles of every color, colored spray (kind of like spray paint for icing), chocolate chips, toffee bits, crushed Oreos, gummy worms and colored fondant. I think most of them tried to put a little of everything on each cupcake! I think they enjoyed being able to be creative though. They opened presents after that then enjoyed a little pizza picnic in the backyard for lunch. The rest of the time they played outside and in MJ's room. At the end of the party, they each enjoyed one of their cupcake masterpieces!

Later that evening, we had Josh's family over for a bbq and more birthday fun. It was also the BSU vs. Wyoming game. I finished decorating the rest of the cupcakes after all the friends had left the party, and made some blue and orange ones to celebrate the game.

All in all, I think MJ enjoyed her birthday weekend. Sunday was quite relaxing. After going to church, we came home, played outside and watched a movie together. It was nice to just hanging out as a family. Happy Birthday Sweetie! You are such a joy to us and we love you very much!

Fall Family Portrait Time ~ Idaho Family Photographer

I just love fall. It's one of my favorite seasons. The crisp cool mornings and warm afternoons have been wonderful. It's definitely layering weather, as it seems to change as the day goes on. I've noticed the leaves are changing now too. School and football season (Go Wildcats!) are in full swing. Our girls are playing soccer this year, so it's been fun to watch them also.

I also love fall because of all the wonderful clients I get to meet and photograph! One of the questions I get from families is what do we wear?! I found these guides to give you some suggestions. I always tell my families to think of your outfits as one big outfit that needs to coordinate together. No need to be totally matchy-matchy, but pick a simple color palette and spread it around to each member of the family. A couple of these examples only have girls' clothing, but you can see how you can take the suggestions and apply it to all members of the family. Also, don't get caught up in the particular style of clothing. Skinny jeans not your thing? Mine neither. So go with a little bootcut or flair. Or put on a jean skirt and some colorful tights. Whatever you love! These are just some ideas to get you inspired. You want to be comfortable and look fabulous for capturing this special time in your family's life! Happy Fall!

I am so excited to share the Christmas/Holiday Card Templates for this season. I worked with my awesome designer friend, Deanna, at Accent Design, to come up with some traditional and contemporary designs. I gave her a few ideas and just let her run with them. I also worked with her on the redesign of my logo and branding. I knew exactly what I wanted for my logo, but also realized my time was better spent photographing and editing my client sessions. We work well as a team and it was great to know she understood my ideas and could expand on them. I encourage you to give her a call if you need any custom design or printing work done. I will continue to create all my custom designed albums and collages, which are signature products of Maggie Malson Photography, but it was time to bring in another creative mind who could help me get to where I wanted to go with my new look. Western Idaho Fair ~ Getting personal

Two weekends ago, our family showed Angus cattle at the Western Idaho Fair in Boise. We always have a great time visiting with family and fellow cattle enthusiasts. The kids also love the chance to help out with the show cattle, watering, feeding, leading heifers, running errands, etc. For those of you who didn't know, my husband and I live and work on a registered Angus and Hereford cattle operation owned by his family. We love the lifestyle we have--being able to raise our kids around animals, teaching them about agriculture, providing food and fiber for our country, taking care of the resources God has given us and realizing how much hard work and dedication it takes to run a family cattle operation. And even though it is a lot of work, we also have fun too. The fair is a great way for us to advertise our program, genetics and animals we raise. Our cattle are raised as the parent stock for cow-calf producers. We raise bulls to be used by commercial cattle producers to raise the beef consumers eat. We also sell show heifers for youth to show in 4-H, FFA and breed association shows, as well as purebred females for other registered herds. Just wanted to give you a glimpse of the other side of my family and what we do.

In fact, my start in photography was photographing livestock, mainly cattle and horses, and people, for the stories I wrote for livestock publications. I have always had a love of agriculture, growing up in a small town in Kansas and attending Kansas State University to major in agricultural communications. My experience in interviewing and writing stories, as well as photographing America's farmers and ranchers has given me great experience and prepared me for my role as a portrait photographer. I love asking questions, and getting to know people. We are all so unique and offer such different perspectives on life. I feel my interviewing skills help me when meeting new clients and getting to know them and to help them feel relaxed. Many of the people I've interviewed for stories have become friends. And that's what I love about my portrait clients as well. We get to know each other and become friends. That's one of the best parts about this work. Preserving memories, meeting new people and making new friends.

And as a lifestyle photographer, I am dedicated to capturing the details and little moments of life for other families as well as my own. So here is just a little glimpse of show day for us.

At times, I have to take off my photographer hat, put on the mom/wife/gofer hat and just grab the moments as they come in amongst keeping track of little ones, holding heifers or running back to the stall for a forgotten item.)

First Haircut ~ Getting personal

When we were in Kansas visiting family this summer, my aunt gave Little J is first haircut. His hair looked like it might have some curl to it, but everyone else thought it looked like a mullet. It was a little hard for me because I thought it was cute, and didn't want to let those baby curls go, but he looked so handsome afterwards-definitely more like a little boy and less like a baby. We had to bribe him a little with a sucker, but he sat quite still most of the time. Just wanted to capture another little milestone in my baby boy's life.

Snickers Cheesecake ~ Getting personal

Earlier in the month, we celebrated my husband's birthday. I wanted to make him something special because I have a major sweet tooth (we all do) so I love any reason to bake. I had found this recipe back in July and since cheesecake is one of my hubby's favorite desserts, I thought this the perfect occasion. Now mind you, I have never made a real cheesecake. I have thought about it, but it was always easier and less time consuming to just open the cheesecake box mix. Now, I'm not knocking it. I love that stuff, but now after trying this EASY and DELICIOUS recipe, I may just have to add this dessert to my new favs list! The recipe is from PW's Tasty Kitchen. I think the hardest part was getting the batter really, really smooth, but it was worth the extra time and effort. I also whipped the heck out of the eggs, so I had extra batter and was able to make TWO cheesecakes! The second one I didn't do the Snickers crust, but added lemon extract to the batter for a twist. The thing about this recipe is it's really versatile and you could do anything with it. So, as you can see from the photos, the cheesecake was loved by all, especially one sweetheart of a boy. When I was serving the others and he started signing "more", I couldn't resist and gave him some. I guess he has he's mama's sweet tooth too! You should try it...it's so good! The recipe says it's best after three days and I would have to agree, but it was still good the first day. I left it in the fridge overnight after I baked it and we had it the next evening. I just drizzled hot fudge sauce over each slice rather than put chocolate and caramel sauce over the entire thing.

Local Linky Love ~ Idaho Children's Photographer

Just wanted to share a little local linky love with all of you.

Happy Heart Musikgarten is starting up the fall semester and Miss Robin is offering a free baby class! The girls and I were enrolled in several classes the last few years, and it was such a great experience. They both loved the singing and dancing, and I love that this particular music education program starts at birth. Our Little E had a slight delay in speech, and these classes really helped her progress in her therapy as well. Our oldest daughter is also getting ready to start piano lessons with Miss Robin.
Free baby music classes will begin Sept. 15, in Ontario, at 10:45am. Babies may attend class FREE until they are 18 months old. Free childcare is provided for older siblings while moms/babies are in class. What a deal!! Classes are one half-hour of musical play: bouncing, rocking, dancing, peek-a-boo, and finger play, etc., that nurture bonding and brain stimulation. These classes are sweet fun for mom and baby! Don't know what to sing to your baby? This class will give you plenty of repertoire! There is also an alternate evening time on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. that does not include childcare. Tips for Parents for Portrait Sessions ~ Idaho Children/Family Photographer

I found this really great article, and it's a definite must-read for parents. These are some of the very same thoughts I have after working with my own clients. These are just some helpful hints to keep in mind for your next portrait session. As a custom lifestyle photographer, I want to do everything I can to capture your children or family as you are, and to create beautiful, timeless portraits for you. These hints will help you be well prepared for your session. This article was written by Amanda McGhee of Kimberlin Gray Photography. You can find the original blog post here.

“The Rules for Parents”

1. Come to the session with well-rested, well-fed children. Nap times might need to be adjusted on the day of our session for the littlest, or dinner time might have to be a couple hours early. It truly makes a WORLD of difference if you plan your day around our session – even if it means a schedule that is non-typical for your family. A good photographer will interact with your child, play games, chat with them and make them feel comfortable. But we cannot take a tired, hungry, writhing ball of meltdown (can you tell I HAVE toddlers?! ) and create a beautiful portrait!!

2. Don’t prep your child too much for a photo session. Talking about it for days on end (or even all day on the day of the session) only raises the stress level for your child and creates an atmosphere of “you’d better…or else!”. It’s better to let your child become comfortable at the session and have their personality shine through. That said, bring a “backup plan”. If you have wee little ones, bringing a non-messy snack (for babies: puffs, small cookies, etc.) and a drink is essential! For older toddlers, a special snack (something a bit exciting even!) might be just the thing to get that big smile! If your child has a lovey or special friend that you don’t mind being in some photos, it can be a great comfort item. I am not above bribery, but be sure to keep it positive and specific. “Give two beautiful smiles and you get a special treat!” is great.

3. Allow your photographer to interact with your child. Don’t answer for them – or chime in with your own thoughts. The photographer needs to spend a few moments getting comfortable with your child and allowing your child to get comfortable with her. Many times I will ask children questions about what things they like, about their teacher or friends, or find something in common to chat about. It helps to break the ice and allows the photographer to get a sense of your child’s personality.

4. If you have a baby, allow the photographer to interact with her and try to get her to look at the camera and smile. This is a hard one for parents. If there’s a particular thing that “works” – a game, a sound, a word, a song – tell the photographer at the beginning of your session together and allow her to try it with your baby. The goal of the photographer is to get your baby to look directly into the camera. If you are standing to the photographer’s left or right, even slightly, and shouting your baby’s name to get her to look up, she is going to look AT YOU! Why is that a bad thing? Because even though she could be giving the best, most beautiful and perfect smile to you…when you see the photo, it looks like she’s smiling at someone outside the frame. I never really understood this until I started photographing children professionally, but now I notice it all the time. In most studio photos, the children are almost always looking at someone above the camera’s level. My goal as a custom photographer is to capture your child(ren) looking right at me – so that when you see that photo, it looks like they are smiling directly at you every time you look at the picture. You will see the twinkle in their eye, you will see the mischievous grin, you will feel the connection! It is hard to step back and not interact with your own baby – but let the photographer try first. She’ll let you know if she needs help!

5. If your child is between 12 months and 2 1/2 years old, expect your session to be a lot of “follow the baby around”! This age is the most unpredictable. Since bribing, cajoling, and joking doesn’t work yet, we are forced to go with the flow! The best thing to do is to see where he wants to play, sit, stand and then position yourselves around him for a group shot. When he moves, you move! Again, interact like you normally do – if that’s playing peek-a-boo or clapping, we’ll capture it, and maybe a few smiles in the process!

6. If you have older toddlers or elementary school children, allow the photographer some space to work with them. If you “disappear” or hang back a bit, photographers can often work more easily with your child – especially siblings! Trust us, we have interacted with many children and have a few tricks up our sleeves! Oftentimes, children will act up when their parents are around and watching just to get their attention – but they wouldn’t dare misbehave with a stranger! (Just ask their teachers – they are angels at school, right?!) I sometimes take a child by the hand and we take a walk to a new location so that we can start fresh and not have mom and dad watching our every move. Most of the time, I capture the truest smiles that way!

7. Try not to threaten your child or coerce them into smiling. You are most likely not going to get a genuine smile if you’ve just told them that they must smile or you will beat them within an inch of their lives not take them for ice cream. Please, whatever you do, don’t tell your child to SAY CHEESE! It does not capture their true smile and we’re probably only going to get that smile the rest of the session. (That’s why they call it a cheezy smile!) Your photographer will help with fun things to make your child smile – or you could always just start a tickle fight or say something really silly that makes everyone laugh!

8. Get close. When you stand next to each other, you should always be touching! Wrap your arms around each other or hold hands. Even a few inches of space looks like a wide gap in a picture! I often tell people to, “act like you like each other!” (which always gets people to smile, by the way!) because I want them to be close. Kids sitting on laps, or standing with their arms around their parents legs or shoulders are natural “poses”. Your closeness and love for each other will shine through if you are close to each other when standing or sitting for a photograph.

9. Your job, as parents is to look at the camera and smile when we attempt the big group shot. When your photographer poses you and is doing her best to get the childrens’ attention, don’t look down at the kids!!! My job is to get the baby to smile. My job is to keep the kids looking at me. My job is to see whose head is turned or fingers are in their mouth. Your job is to plaster that (natural!) smile on your face and look at my camera! There have been too many times when I’ve gotten home, downloaded a family session, and found that by the time I got all three or four kids looking at the camera and smiling, the mom and dad had dropped their smiles or were “just checking” to see if the kids were smiling. So, I either have a great shot of mom and dad with wild monkeys or beautiful children with parents who look completely over it! Remember to just look at the camera and smile – your photographer will do the rest!!

10. Be yourselves and try to have fun! The absolute best family photographs are those where the family looks comfortable and connected. If you are silly, be silly during your session. If dad is the comedian, by all means, bring on the jokes! If your kids like to play Ring around the Rosy (or Superheroes!), let’s get to it early on in the session so that we can capture your family being you. After all, that’s what you want to remember in ten or twenty years, right?

Remember these tips the next time you have your portrait session, and we will all have a fun and relaxed time capturing your family memories!  

Three Little Angels ~ Southwest Idaho Children's Photographer

Friends of ours recently welcomed home their third little angel, and she is quite the miracle baby arriving 6 weeks early and spending time in the NICU. Thankfully, she is doing wonderfully. After getting home and a little settled, Mom called me to capture some beautiful newborn and sister images. Baby G was soooo tiny. It is simply amazing these little wonders God gives us! Big Sister A just turned two, so we had to capture some fun toddler moments of her too! She is a little busy bee, but I had a ton of fun spending the afternoon with her and her babies. Children/Family sessions begin at $150. This includes a pre-session styling consult, a personal, professional custom portrait session, full editing and retouching of the best images and an online gallery to share with family and friends. I will also be offering in-person proofing and ordering as well. This gives you an opportunity to see how your images will be cropped for different sizes, how they look in custom-designed albums, and also as beautiful timeless wall art. For an additional $200, you may also receive all printed 4X6 or 5X7 proofs in a custom-designed image box. These can be displayed in the box, given to friends and family or used how you wish. The New/Old Chair and Miss M ~ Fruitland Children's Photographer

If you follow me on Facebook (which if you don't, you should, wink, wink), you might have read I was bringing back some fun new props from our vacation in Kansas, and I was so excited to use them in some upcoming sessions. I finally got to use one of them-the old, but new to me, awesome black vintage chair that was my great grandmothers. My sister has a matching one. I have always drooled over it when I visit her house, and she was even going to give hers to me, however, my mom knew there was another one still in the basement of my grandma's house. I love having items that were passed down from other generations. There is always a history to them. After a good clean-up, the chair looks brand new, and I love it!! One of my recent sessions of the just-turned-seven, Miss M, was the perfect one for it to make its debut. I love, love, love the images from my evening with her. I have had the hardest time editing them down because M was the perfect model and didn't really take a bad shot. We had fun stomping out in the big field, and also with some of her furry friends. It was fun to have a little one-on-one time with her and see her little personality shine. She is a real sweetheart. Thanks M and mom, Lisa, for a fun evening. Hope you enjoy your sneak peek.

I did some of them in my traditional style of editing, but I also knew I wanted to add a vintage feel to others. This session was perfect for that. I even tried a little texture on the last one. Sisters Make the Best of Friends ~ Custom Portrait Photography

I photographed these beautiful sisters while we were in Kansas visiting my hometown. I remember when each of them was born and my family watched them grow up. Now they are old enough to be babysitting my kids! Their mom is a dear friend and was a mentor to me in 4-H and while I was growing up. I was so excited she asked me photograph the girls together. Miss K will be a senior this year, so it was important for us to capture them together before life gets even busier! I am also excited to get to design their images into a keepsake album for them. It's a wonderful way to preserve all the images from a session.

The girls were truly delightful and up for anything. We had fun running around town, photographing them at the county museum, the local playground (where we all attended grade school), the restored soda fountain/old drug store and their beautiful backyard. K also worked at "The Old Store" so it holds some fond memories for her from the last five years. That's what I love about being an on-location photographer. I can come to my clients, wherever is the most special to them. I hope you girls have a great year and enjoy your sneak peeks! A New Beginning ~ Newborn Portrait Photographer

I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding last weekend in Kansas. It's always special to capture a milestone day for a couple as they begin the next journey in life as husband and wife. Plus, this wedding was extra special as it was my cousin E saying "I do." She was simply stunning and the love between these two was very apparent. Thank you both for choosing me to capture your special day. May you have a very blessed marriage. Plus, you simply can not beat a Kansas sunset! For the locals in the area, there is great new consignment furniture and clothing store in downtown Payette, on Main Street. Have you heard of it? It's called ReDesign-consignment home furnishings. They also have very nice gently used women's clothing. That part of the store is called Refined Style-consignment boutique & gift shoppe. I encourage you to stop by and say hi to Cissy and Karen! They are open five days a week too from 10-5. Really cool stuff-some new, some vintage, but all neat!

A new site that I've found recently is Simply Modern Mom. It's totally with crafts, home decor, photography, organizational tips and much more. Check it out. Also, she happens to be having a cool giveaway for a purse/camera bag, from Jo Totes. Everyone needs one of these-even if you don't carry a camera-they would make a great diaper bag or purse. I have my eye on the new rose vintage bag. I think maybe in plum even!

Well, I think that's it for now, but a post isn't complete without at least one photo. And actually here are three. They also happen to the be the "something(s)" I'm thankful for. I am thankful for this land, our ranch, our home, our family and our opportunity. I am thankful that each day I look outside and see these black beauties in the pastures outside our home. I'm thankful our children will grow up learning the value of hard work and taking care of the animals we raise and the land we live on. I'm thankful for the opportunity to capture these little moments of the kids checking out the cows after their bath, before bedtime, on a warm, summer night. Who doesn't just want to run outside and say hi to the critters over the fence?! :0)

As we head into the 4th of July weekend, I hope everyone has a safe and happy celebration of America. It's a wonderful place to live! God bless the U.S.A.!

Little H is growing up! ~ Nampa Family Photographer

I think I've said this before, but I'll say it again. I love, love photographing clients over and over again. It's neat to see newborns grow into babies and toddlers and so on. It's neat to hear what the kids are up to and see how much they have changed. This family is no exception. Little H was very busy, but also a little curious about the lady with the camera so he gave me some fun looks too. He was a hoot when Mom got out the bubbles. At his 9 month session, he really didn't think much of them, but boy did he like them this time. He was practically eating them! And a game of peekaboo is always a hit with this age! A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing my friend, B, who was awaiting the arrival of her second child. She was absolutely beautiful. I had so many amazing images of her. There is something so awe-inspiring about a woman with child. Such a miraculous gift. I am happy to report that the C Family was blessed with a perfect baby boy 1 week ago! I can't wait to get my hands on him at his newborn session! Little Miss P will be a great big sister. I'm sure she's already smothering little brother with hugs and kisses! Congratulations guys! Happy Memorial Day!

On this Memorial Day, we remember those friends and family who have gone before us. We reminiscence and share memories of them. We also want to thank the men and women of the military serving here and beyond, as well as the police, fire fighters and emergency personnel. Thank you for your sacrifices!

Little Dancers ~ Idaho Children's Photography

So this week I'm busy working on two very fun family sessions, so until they are ready to post, I thought I'd put up a few more from the dance studio. I love getting in close and getting the details.

That's something I'd also suggest to all those moms out their with your cameras. Get your kids outside and let them play-then get in close with your camera. Get their messy hands playing in the dirt or gripping the baseball bat. Look for different angles too to show the ordinary in a fun new way.

Summer bookings ~ Children/Family Photography

I hope everyone is enjoying the nice warm weather and getting ready for summer break. I know I'm excited to have my kiddos home for awhile. We have lots of activities planned-playing outside in the water, summer reading programs, vacation Bible schools and a trip to see my family. I hope whatever summer plans you have, you enjoy them with those you love.

Just a few housekeeping things; I am currently booking sessions for June and August. I will be in Kansas for most of July and will not be booking any sessions in Idaho that month. *Unless you are expecting and due this summer, then contact me ASAP and I will fit you in before I leave.

The Children's Special, which is a $50 session fee with 1 5X7 gift print is available until June 21. The image will also be entered in the Millers Baby and Child portrait contest. These are open to children 12 and under. Session fee is for one child.

My introductory print rates will expire at the end of May. If you would like a session with me, please call ASAP. For those who book their summer session before the end of May, your session will be booked (meaning a signed portrait agreement & payment) at the a sitting fee of $150 and the introductory price list. That price list will remain in effect up to 30 days after your session. Any orders placed after that will be priced at the standard pricing. Session fees, and gift and wall print prices are available on my website, www.maggiemalsonphotography.com, and collection pricing will be added shortly. I am also happy to discuss your investment in custom portrait photography with you in person or over the phone.
